All of us love the HERO festival however some Waitakere Lesbians wanted to show off the west as a place where lesbians work, live and play. And so a group of us decided to bring HERO out west and Heroes Out West was born. That way we didn't need to go into Auckland to enjoy the celebrations.
The inaugural event was held on 17 February 2008 at Falls Park in central Henderson. At the event Mayor Bob Harvey, very supportive of the event, gifted the use of Falls Park to the lesbians forever!
Loosely themed around Radcliff Hall the event carried a nominal cover charge. T here were gazebos with white linen table clothes and peacock feathers, entertainment by the late Mahinarangi Tocker, one of her last performances, Edwina Thorne, Comedian Ann Speir and other local entertainers and many lesbians took the opportunity to indulge in bring your own wine and luxury picnic hampers.
Everyone had a blast and a bigger and better event is planned for 2009.
The organising team is committed to providing opportunities for lesbians and friends to be entertained, to meet, have fun and celebrate all that is wonderful in being lesbian. By providing these opportunities we believe diversity is promoted and celebrated and that sends positive messages to our family, friends and whanau about who we are.
